Manama: Bahrain yesterday backed the setting up of a special body to deal with GCC economic disputes.

Articles of association stipulating the establishment of the GCC Judiciary Economic Authority were endorsed yesterday by the Cabinet, chaired by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

Ministers approved its ratification and referred it to the legislative branch.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, attended.

The GCC Supreme Council had endorsed the authority, in line with the vision of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. It will be mandated to consider claims arising from the implementation of provisions of the Unified Economic Agreement.

The Premier hailed Bahrain’s human rights strides in the prosperous era of His Majesty King Hamad, saying that the government would build on achievements and further promote respect of human rights and dignity and bolster liberties.

He made the statement marking Arab Human Rights Day, observed on March 16. He hailed the King’s initiative to establish the Arab Human Rights Court – a step which won Arab and international praise.

An agreement on avoiding double taxation and fiscal evasion between Bahrain and Switzerland was given the green light.

The Finance Minister was also mandated to sign the deal on behalf of Bahrain, prior to taking required constitutional measures.

A memorandum of understanding on developing healthcare co-operation between Bahrain and India was endorsed.

The session also discussed the restructuring of Customs Affairs, based on a memo referred by the Interior Minister to the Civil Service Council.
