UAE - Mubasher: The UAE's imports of dried fruits from Chile hiked by 75% to $43.8 million in 2019 from $25 million in 2018, according to a press release on Tuesday.

The UAE's imports of walnuts represented 76% of the total dried fruit imports from Chile, which is the world's second-largest exporter of walnuts behind Australia with more than 111 million tonnes in 2019.

Hence, Chile has announced its plans to become the UAE's exporter of choice regarding dried fruits, particularly walnuts, following the launch of a new campaign to present the quality and health benefits of the nut.

Over 95% of Chile's production of dried fruit is exported to 75 countries, with the Middle East accounting for 54% of the exports in 2019.

Chile's production of dried fruit is expected to rise to 163 million tonnes in 2021 and 200 million tonnes in 2024.

The Trade Commissioner of Chile in Dubai, Carlos Salas, commented: "The UAE, and the wider GCC region, is an incredibly important market for Chilean walnut exporters. The melting pot of ethnicities and growing demand for sustainable and quality healthy foods as a result of COVID-19 means the region is ripe for exporters to reconnect with the country."
