Egypt prepares $50bln strategy for water resources development until 2050

Egypt has set a strategy for water resources development until 2050, at a cost of up to $50 billion that could reach $100 billion, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdel Atti said in a statement.

Moreover, the irrigation ministry has set a national plan based on four points, including the rationalization of water consumption, improving the quality of water, and adding new sources of water, to resolve all water-related problems in Egypt until 2037, the minister pointed out.

The ministry has taken several measures over the past five years to deal with any obstacles facing the water system through the implementation of a number of major projects, including the national project for canals rehabilitation, Abdel Atti added.

The Egyptian National Canals Rehabilitation Project is one of the world’s largest projects in this field, and its aims at enhancing the process of water management and distribution.

Moreover, the ministry is also carrying out major projects, targeting expansion in the agricultural wastewater reuse as well as promoting smart irrigation methods, the minister highlighted.

These comments have been made on the sidelines of the minister’s meeting with the Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security Yerlan Baidaulet.
