MANAMA: A Bahraini company is making a contribution to the UK’s renewable energy strategy through a deal to convert waste into electricity.

Oak Group Holdings, a Bahrain-based leader in renewable energy innovation and delivery, has completed a deal to generate and inject biogas into the UK National Gas Grid.

This is under a 25-year off-take agreement with Cadent Gas, a quasi-government organisation and one of the major operators in the UK National Gas Grid distribution network supplying over 12 million homes and businesses with natural gas.

Through its incorporated UK holding, $100m of leveraged investment capital will allow Oak to build, own and operate an initial three waste-to-energy plants in the UK which will collectively inject up to 6,000kg per hour of biogas.

Located in Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and Somerset, the three plants will not only produce clean and sustainable energy, but also provide other environmental benefits by diminishing the need for landfill sites and eliminating harmful toxic emissions and potential contamination by converting both organic and inorganic waste feedstock into biogas.

OAK Group Holdings chief executive Gareth Brown said, “It is with great pride that a Bahrain-based company can compete and win concession agreements in advanced economies where cutting-edge technologies are the norm, such as in the UK and most interestingly, in Canada where last December our Anergy High-Temperature Pyrolysis technology was inaugurated.”

According to him, the success of the Oak Group in the expanding and highly competitive international renewable energy market derives from the company’s agility and structure.

“In every country in the world today, governments are accountable for the level of commitment and effectiveness in making changes to their energy equation, we in Oak are geared to meet those challenges and expectations and at the same time promote Bahrain as a place where innovative companies can thrive.”
