Tokyo stocks trimmed early gains to end lower on Thursday as investors opted to wait and see ahead of the Bank of Japan's policy decision.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.40 percent, or 156.24 points, to end at 38,720.47, while the broader Topix index slipped 0.89 percent, or 24.66 points, to 2,731.78.
