Nestle launched its third solar plant in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with its 1.7 GWh solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the port city of El Jadida on Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

The company said in a statement that it has installed nearly 2,600 PV panels on a 7,000 square metre (sqm)annex to its local milk and coffee products factory, which will help the Swiss multinational meet its global commitments to halve its emissions by 2030 and achieve a net zero goal by 2050.

It said solar plant, its third in the region after Dubai and Jordan, was built with close to $1.3 million investment in collaboration with renewable energy leader Qair.

"Nestlé’s solar plant in El Jadida contributes to the realization of the national energy strategy that aims to generate over 52 percent of the Kingdom’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030," the statement said, quoting Aziz Rabbah, Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Environment.

Globally, Nestlé expects to complete the transition of its 800 sites in the 187 countries where it operates to 100 percent renewable electricity within the next five years. The company operates 25 factories in the MENA region, according to the statement.
