MUSCAT The Departments of Urban Planning and Architectural Design and Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development of the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) in cooperation with the ETH Zurich, Studio Basel, will hold a joint symposium entitled "Urban Oman - urban design, geography and planning in the wider Muscat Region" on Sunday 10 March at GUtech in Halban. "The symposium will launch a joint workshop on urban planning and urban geography in Muscat," said Prof. Aurel von Richthofen, Assistant Professor at GUtech. A group of 16 architecture master's students and their professors of ETH Zuerich will work on a joint project along with students and professors of GUtech. ETH Zuerich is one of the leading universities of technology in Europe.

During the symposium a number of professors of the Department of Urban Planning and Architectural Design as well as Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development of both universities will present their work and research. Two professors of ETH Zuerich will present three case studies of cities in different continents: Miami, Ho Chi Minh City and Cairo. Other presentations will be titled  "On development processes and the role of the state in Muscat", "Population, migration and urbanisation in Oman", "Towards sustainable patterns of urbanization in Oman" and "Urbanism in Zanzibar",
