Conference on February 26-27, 2014, endorsed by international body SESAM (Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine), to demonstrate simulation in patient safety

Dubai, February 18, 2014: No doctor or nurse should perform a clinical procedure for the first time on a real patient. Instead the clinical training should be in a simulated environment, allowing the healthcare professional to learn in a safe setting in which medical errors do not harm human life.

This is the driving message of the First Clinical Simulation Conference (CSC) 2014 that will be held on February 26-27, 2014 at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Centre (MBR-AMC) at Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a health and wellness destination that brings together a wealth of services in healthcare, medical education and research.

Organised by DHCC, the conference will serve as a platform to connect industry experts, academic institutions and healthcare professionals to collectively advance simulation in clinical training. Healthcare professionals can avail of the education and hands-on training available during the Conference.

Endorsed by SESAM (Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine), the Conference will address simulation in areas like emergency, work and organisational psychology, nursing and ergonomics, among others.

Under the theme of 'Simulation - a Storyboard for Training', the Conference will host international experts Dr. Basil Matta, Divisional Director of Emergency and Perioperative Care from the Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, UK; Dr. Peter Dieckman, Work and Organizational Psychologist, the Danish Institute for Medical Simulation (DIMS), Denmark; Dr. Suzan E. Kardong-Edgren, Research Associate Professor, Boise State University, the US, Dr. Ralf Krage, President of SESAM, The Netherlands, who will be the keynote speaker, and from the UAE, Dr. Nicklas Dahlstrom, Human Factors Manager, Emirates Airline.

Marwan Abedin, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Healthcare City said: "The UAE's first Simulation Conference positions Dubai as an internationally-recognised medical education and healthcare hub.  We look forward to welcoming the delegates and to share their findings with the medical community at large."

Dr Amer Sharif, Managing Director - Education, DHCC added: "Studies confirm the role of simulation training towards development of clinical practice and skills. The healthcare sector is advancing rapidly, making simulation training integral, especially when [healthcare] professionals have to perform skills in high pressure situations.

"At DHCC, we realise the importance of continuous professional development. As such we have established the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Medical Simulation Center, the first of its kind in the UAE, which aims to facilitate medical training in a simulated environment and ultimately enhances the medical education sector by building capacity."

Commencing with a pre-conference education workshop on February 25, the two-day Conference will kick off on February 26, focusing on simulated practice, understanding the educational methodology behind simulation training and familiarising participants with the equipment and resources available in the region. The event will also include an exhibition which will feature organizations that offer solutions in simulation practices.
