Full day educational session to introduce the Contractor Safety Manual aimed at the application of environmental health and safety responsibilities on all Tawam Hospital premises

Contractor Safety Manual, is part of the Tawam Hospital Safety Program, and is in compliance with the JCIA for Facility Management & Safety Standard

Al Ain, August, 18th, 2009: Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with John Hopkins Medicine, held a full day educational session on contractor health and safety responsibilities. The session introduced the Contractor Safety Manual, which is in compliance with the Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) for Facility Management & Safety Standards, aimed at eliminating all accidents and injuries when external contractors are working on site.

Contractors with regular work at the Tawam premises were introduced to the Contractor Safety Manual, part of the Safety Program which contains all safety practices for working at the Hospital premises.

The Manual covers all aspects of working in a safe environment from overcoming language barriers in training to carrying proof of identity and disposing of hazardous waste. It is aimed at all contractors and sub-contractors responsible for construction, maintenance and repairs, cleaning and even catering.

Steve Matarelli, Chief Operating Officer for Tawam Hospital described the initiative as part of the hospital's commitment to the health and safety not just of its patients and own staff, but those of the contractors, too. "This is an ongoing program, designed to help our contractors train their staff on how to follow the safest path to safe, successful work."

Ahmed Malalla Al Ali, Head of Environmental Health & Safety Department, described the initiative as a vital step towards reducing the risk of injury and providing the safest possible surroundings.

"It is extremely important not just for outside contractors to know their responsibilities when working on site, but it is equally important for us, as one of the regions leading healthcare providers, to put our own practices into place and set its own standards of safety," he said.

"Tawam hospital has taken the initiative to lay down these practices and procedures, which identify exactly the right guidelines for operating in an accident free environment," he added.

"These are highly practical, step-by-step points of reference from accident avoidance to reporting procedures, which also provide a high level of confidence in the contractors as well as the hospital."

Shiva Raja Singh, a Safety Officer at Group 4 Securicor, a security service provider in the UAE, attended the full day session and said that the program is a highly useful tool for standardising health and safety issues. "It's extremely valuable for us to be able to take away these practices and train our staff on which procedures to use and how to apply them."

The Contractor Safety Manual is part of a larger Quality Improvement Program under which Tawam Hospital constantly aims to provide the best service, efficiency and quality care to its patients.

Tawam is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
