Hart's E&P recognizes wireline retrievable flow control-electric valve and LiteCRETE

HOUSTON - Two Schlumberger technologies, the latest-generation electric flow control valve and an ultra-lightweight cement system, have been awarded the prestigious Hart E&P 2002 Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation. Awards were presented at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston today.

The wireline retrievable flow control-electric (WRFC-E) valve and LiteCRETE* ultra-lightweight cement system were recognized for their technological excellence, innovation, practical ability to solve oilfield problems, and potential for improving profitability, safety and efficiency.

"In today's demanding worldwide oil and gas market, the importance of cutting-edge technological development has never been more critical to the upstream industry," said Bill Pike, editor-in-chief, Hart's E&P. "It is with great pride that Hart's E&P recognizes outstanding technological advances through its Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Excellence program. The award recipients have made material contributions to the continuing health, safety and efficiency of upstream operations."

WRFC-E
The WRFC-E valve is an electrically actuated flow controller with a multiposition flow choke designed for use in optimizing production from oil and gas wells. The design also lends itself to injection applications in alternate configurations. Multiple WRFC-Es installed with a single permanent down-hole control conduit can be remotely controlled at the wellsite or at any location worldwide through the use of the Schlumberger InterACT* wellsite monitoring and control system. This technology was installed in bp's Wytch Farm Field in the U.K., making it the industry's first all electric controller used in field operations. Three WRFC-E valves have been installed in a production optimization field experiment led by Schlumberger-Doll Research Center.

"This valve design is proving highly effective in helping manage the reservoir," said Peter Goode, president, Well Completions and Productivity for Schlumberger Oilfield Services. "These valves coupled with other field-proven sensor technologies confirm that the all electric WRFC-E will help our clients increase production and extend the life of their fields."

LiteCRETE
The other Schlumberger winner, LiteCRETE ultra-light cement system, is purpose-designed for low-fracture-gradient oil and gas wells in formations incapable of supporting standard cement densities. The new system delivers excellent mechanical properties and provides a superior alternative to foamed cement that is often difficult to source in many parts of the world. In addition to its' advanced physical properties, LiteCRETE offers other advantages in that it does not require additional personnel, specialized equipment or special additives to deployed in the field. Operators around the globe, and most recently in Middle East and Latin America, have seen tremendous success with Schlumberger LiteCRETE technology.

"We work closely with our clients to help them meet the rigorous demands of modern well construction through advanced, innovative technologies," said Zaki Selim, president, Well Services for Schlumberger Oilfield Services. "LiteCRETE is an excellent example where we helped our clients meet a specific down-hole challenge by creating a new and effective means of reliable zonal isolation."
