Dubai: International mining company, FURA Gems hosted its inaugural auction of Colombian Emeralds mined from the iconic Coscuez Emerald Mine. The first leg of the auction took place in Dubai, UAE from the 2nd  to 7th of March, with the follow-up leg in the Colombian capital city of Bogota from the 15th to 19th of  March.

Over 60 gemstone collectors, traders, and lapidaries from India, Hong Kong, Israel, the USA, Thailand, and Colombia attended the event. This auction featured the largest quantity of rough Emeralds covering high, medium, and commercial qualities, including premium-quality one of the pieces.  This was the first auction of its kind.

The total quantity of rough emeralds that were displayed at the auction has had a total weight of around 115,000 carats. Among these, are 4 magnificent emeralds, the rarest of fine Colombian Emeralds, weighing 104 carats in total. FURA has appropriately named the collection of these 4 pieces Renaissance de Coscuez 1646”.

The inspiration behind its name comes from Spanish records that indicate in July of 1646 Captain Francisco de Ovalle, arrived in the city of Muzo carrying a royal seal that named him Lord of Mines and overseer of all that he discovered in the Coscuez heights "as long as the gems showed the green of the emerald." Even with all of the mines he visited, Captain Francisco de Ovalle was so impressed with the gems he saw in Coscuez (Fura’s present-day mine in Colombia), he declared that the Coscuez mine Emeralds to be separate, meaning known to be the rarest.

The collection could complete a ring, earrings, and pendant set for the connoisseur collector. FURA is looking forward to working with the winner of this special collection to create global appreciation.

One of FURA’s three corporate pillars is community. With this in mind, FURA will be using part of the proceeds from the Renaissance de Coscuez 1646 collection to support their recently launched Coscuez Training Academy. The free local academy supports Coscuez community members who would like to be trained in both mining and in other non-mining job activities to ensure their personal growth.

“Since we took over the mine in 2018, a lot of hard work has gone in to transform the mine and all the work is now bearing fruit. The auction is Coscuez’s return to its former glory. We recently extended our license for an additional thirty years.  The mine offers a wide potential to provide consistent supply to the jewelry industry.  For the first time, rough Colombian Emerald will be presented on an organized platform, to a global audience. FURA has acquired the services of  Bonas Group to provide full transparency for the auction process”, says Dev Shetty - president and CEO of FURA Gems.
