e-marine's CS Niwa loads and lays 3500 kms of cable in 101 days
Abu Dhabi: Emirates Telecommunications and Marine Services FZE (e-marine), a subsidiary of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation- Etisalat- has completed the first phase of the international SEA-ME-WE-4 project using their newly acquired cable ship, 'Niwa'.
CS Niwa, the third largest cable ship in the world, took a total of 101 days to complete the task, including loading 3500 kms of different types of cables in Calais, France, and laying the same from Jeddah, down the Red Sea, to the Arabian Sea. Working in ocean depths of over 4000 metres in the Arabian Sea, CS Niwa also deployed 57 submarine optical amplifiers.
Omar Bin Kalban, CEO, e-marine, said: "We are extremely pleased with the results of this project, another milestone in our efforts to be the first choice submarine cable laying company in the region. CS Niwa, our latest acquisition, has proven to be a great asset, especially since we have refitted her with highly advanced navigation and cable management systems. The cable is laid within one metre of its designated location on the seafloor, an indication of absolute positioning accuracy."
e-marine was awarded this contract to connect Jeddah to India in two phases, to be completed by May 2005. SEA-ME-WE-4 is a high capacity fibre optic communications submarine cable system between South East Asia, Middle East and Western Europe, with the extremities in Singapore and Marseilles, France.
