In 1869, the Khedive Ismail built the "Al Gezira" Palace - the historical part of the Cairo Marriott Hotel - to accommodate European royalties that visited Egypt to attend the Suez Canal inauguration celebrations, including Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III.
