The 6th edition of DIPMF closed with a keynote from world’s leading expert in Design Thinking as well as an Olympic silver medalist John Coyle. While simplifying the process of how Design and Thinking can be applied for any project, he highlighted five major principles which included; Accept, Define, Emphatise, Ideate, Prototype.

“The start is to always ‘Accept’ or acknowledge the problem. You can’t solve a problem you are not willing to have. Acceptance is the first step to finding solutions. Next is to ‘Define’ the problem. Gathering data is essential to define the problem and not accepting the status quo without challenging it. Thirdly, one should always put themselves in the shoes of their target customer. We need to be the challenge we wish to solve and make sure we are solving the right challenge or question,” said John

“Ideas have to be generated without judgment by using lateral thinking instead of linear thinking. Generate lots of ideas, then throw out the bad ones. Last but not the least while emphasizing on ‘Prototype’, it is essential to tests quickly and focus on the outcome.” he added.

John concluded his keynote by adding that it is always important to identify strengths and weaknesses as they are equally important and some weaknesses are sometimes strengths in disguise. “Each person’s greatest room for growth is in the areas of his/her greatest strength. You will excel only by maximizing your strengths, never by fixing your weaknesses”, he concluded.
