ACWA Emirates LLC has won a contract to provide a further state-of-the-art MEMTREAT® membrane bioreactor wastewater treatment plant for the high-profile King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Research Park in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The treatment plant will be located close to the existing highly-successful MEMTREAT® plant built by ACWA in 2009 and will serve the new Research Park development within the KAUST development.

The Research Park is part of a comprehensive innovation network linked to technology creation, business formation and development assistance, with established technology firms and the marketplace, providing an environment where technology-based businesses can collaborate on research and development with the Faculty and students at KAUST.

The China National Chemical Engineering Co. (CNCEC) commissioned ACWA to construct the new 7,500 m3/day capacity plant and the new facility is designed to allow two further, identical treatment lanes to be added in future. ACWA's solution will be fully compliant with the process, material, inspection and documentation standards of end client Saudi Aramco, the Kingdom's national oil company.

At the heart of the treatment train is ACWA's advanced MEMTREAT® membrane bioreactor (MBR). The complete treatment process will consist of pre-treatment, followed by the MBR system, and sludge conditioning. The solution will also provide full odour control.

The scope of the work includes design, detailed engineering, procurement, supervision of installation and startup.

ACWA Emirates Director and General Manager, Gary Jackson said: "ACWA is very proud indeed to have been chosen to provide its second MEMTREAT® treatment system to the flagship KAUST project, this accolade is the best proof possible of the ongoing high standard of treatment that our advanced system offers".
