TUNIS (TAP) - "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB):  Recognising Value of Forest Ecosystemic Services and Designing Adapted Financing Lechanisms in Middle East and North Africa (MEAN)" is the topic of the conference to be held next June 28-29 in Tunis.

The conference will be held under the aegis of the Agriculture and Environment Ministry, in association with the German Technical Co-operation (GIZ), mandated by the German Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development and WWF MedPo (World Wildlife Fund Mediterranean Programme), as part of the International Year of Forests 2011.

The conference aims, according to statement of the organisers, to introduce elements and strategies in connection with the initiative "Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity" with special emphasis on Mediterranean forest ecosystems.

It also seeks to raise awareness of the importance of forest ecosystems services in the Middle East and North Africa region and promote exchange of experiences drawing from existing initiatives in matters of economic assessment and financing mechanisms in favour of forest ecosystems and protection of biodiversity in the MEAN region.

Countries concerned by this conference are Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.
