TUNIS (TAP) - Interim Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa, on Saturday, called on governors to mobilise all means at the regional level to help the Independent Higher Authority for the Elections (ISIE) to achieve its mission in the best conditions.
He noted at the opening of the Conference of Governors in the barracks of the National Guard in El Aouina that the success of the electoral process and the Tunisian experience, in general, closely depend on the success of elections and their organisation within the time set by the National Constituent Assembly.
Jomaa emphasised the role of governors in the success of the forthcoming elections.
He stressed the need to improve co-ordination between all members of the Executive at the central and regional levels.
The prime minister said co-operation between ISIE and the government has been constructive so far. It allowed to overcome several difficulties and challenges. "The delicate situation in the country and doubts on the efficiency of the organisation of elections must in no way affect our faith in our ability to overcome difficulties whatever their magnitude."
Several sides are targeting the electoral process, he warned, urging all Tunisians to participate massively in the upcoming elections to finish the last stage of the democratic transition process.
Interior Minister Lotfi Ben Jeddou announced that 4 commissions comprising senior security officials have been formed to monitor the elections. He added that an official was appointed in each region to serve as the only contact person for ISIE.
Secretary of State in charge of Regional and Local Affairs Abderrazak Ben Khalifa spoke of "the delicate situation" of several delegates and Omdas which, he noted, prevent them from being of great help to the ISIE.
ISIE President Chafik Sarsar gave a presentation on "elections and the role of governors" in which he raised the needs of ISIE in regions and challenges it faces.
