Yasmine-Hammamet hosted on Thursday, the 4th symposium on marine vegetation with the participation of over 100 participants from 15 Mediterranean countries and others.

The symposium will focus on several themes including biology, ecology and monitoring of Mediterranean marine vegetation and impact and management of vegetal formations in the Mediterranean.

The edition will be an opportunity to address biological invasions and global warming and their impact on plants in the Mediterranean.

This symposium is part of the action plan for the consecration of marine vegetation in the Mediterranean which, though not having a binding legal nature, is a regional strategy defining priorities and activities to be carried out.

It calls particularly for more solidarity between States of the region and co-ordination of efforts to preserve marine vegetal spaces and natural monuments.

The Mediterranean houses between 4 and 18% of the marine and coastal ecosystem of the world.

During the opening of the symposium, Mr. Nadhir Hamada, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development stressed that the Barcelona Convention for Protection of Marine Environment and Coastal Regions in the Mediterranean reflects the will of theconcerned parties to co-ordinate their efforts to preserve ecosystems in the region.

He also underscored Tunisia's interest in setting up a fair sustainable development to guarantee the right of future generations to sustainable natural resources.
