Sharjah, Nov. 8th, 2007 (WAM) - Doctors in Al Dhaid Hospital today performed a rare surgery to remove seven 1.5 inch leeches from a patient's ear.

According to Dr Nazar Mohammed Al Kubaisi, Head of the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department at the hospital, the patient reported to the hospital with a sever left era bleeding.

"The prelimenary check up identified several leeches inside the ear as causing the bleeding. The patient was put into a local anesthesia and the worms were removed using a liquid suction device," he said.

No personal information about the patient was available.

Leeches thrive in the areas where a lot of raming activities take place.
