DOHA: Expansion of the Woqod Roundabout in Abu Hamour which is currently underway is expected to ease the traffic from Doha to the Industrial Area.
The roundabout is partially closed for traffic as work is progressing in full swing. The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has promised to complete the project by the end of Ramadan.
The roundabout will get signals and the two lane road will be upgraded to three lanes, with additional slip roads. The expansion is part of a slew of projects proposed by a special committee set up by Ashghal to address the traffic congestions in the city.
The roundabout located close to the Woqod petrol station has been identified as one of the traffic hotspots in the city. Being the major exit point for commuters heading towards Industrial Area from Doha and Wakra, the roundabout witnesses heavy traffic in the peak hours. Movement of the tens of trucks and trailers to and from the Industrial Area throughout the day contributes to the rush.
The partial closure of the roundabout has led to traffic congestions in the neighbouring roundabouts. Any delay in completion of the project can worsen the situation, feel many residents. Several leading expatriate schools are located in the Abu Hamour area, which remains closed for the summer and Ramadan holidays. Ashghal has reiterated its commitment to complete the project well before the start of the new academic session.
The Woqod roundabout also serves as the main exit point to the city for the hundreds of families residing in the Barwa housing complex in Mesaimeer. The Abu Hamour Roundabout leading to Woqod Roundabout has been witnessing traffic congestions in the peak hours following the partial closure of the Woqod Roundabout.
Commuters coming from the Industrial Area must come to this roundabout and take a u-turn or left turn if they want to proceed towards the Abu Hamour petrol station and the Mamoura area. Likewise those coming from these areas and want to proceed towards the E-Ring road and the Al Obaidli roundabout should also come directly to the Abu Hamour roundabout.
Tow other major roundabouts on the Doha-Industrial area road- the Abu Hamour roundabout and the Al Obaidli Roundabout- has already been upgraded with traffic lights.
