The harvesting of wheat and barley crops has began in northern Iraq's Kirkuk Province on Sunday, covering 660,000 donums of agricultural lands, Kirkuk's Agriculture Director, Mahdi Mubarak said.

"The campaign to harvest wheat and barley crops has began in Kirkuk areas today, May 15th, for the harvesting of more than 660,000 donums of agricultural lands, including 422,000 donums, depending on irrigation, whilst the rest depending on natural rains," Mubarak told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

He said that the harvesting campaign would continue till the beginning of July, when the silos of Kirkuk, al-Riyadh and Hawija towns shall begin to receive the harvested wheat and barley from Kirkuk peasants, when the quantity of production is expected to be good, as result to the planted areas.

Mubarak said that the Oil Production Company in Kirkuk had contributed in supplying fuel, machines, harvesters and other machines, to share in the harvesting campaign.

Kirkuk, the center of Ninewa Province, is 280 km to the northeast of Baghdad.
