ABU DHABI, 29 Jan 05 (WAM) - The Dubai Department of Tourism and CommerceMarketing (DTCM) is organising a unique Arabic calligraphy exhibitionas part of its DSF-2005 calendar of events for the second consecutiveyear.

The exhibition, being held from tomorrow to February 10 at the Al OwaisCultural Foundation located on Al Riqqa Street in Dubai, is being organisedby the department in cooperation with Istanbul-based Research Centrefor Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), the cultural arm of the15-member Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), according toa report in Khaleej Times.

The 'Dubai International Exhibition on the Art of Arabic Calligraphy'will showcase the works of 25 prize winning contemporary calligraphersfrom eight Arab and Islamic countries viz, the UAE, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt,Syria, Sudan, Iraq and Iran.

Details of the exhibition were announced at a Press conference heldon January 27 at the Al Owais Cultural Foundation and attended by DTCMManager Events and Chairman of DSF Heritage Events Committee, Marwanbin Beyat, Ahmed Mohammed Hasan, Supervisor of the exhibition, D. MohammedAl Tamimi of IRCICA, Linguistic Researcher, Dr Nabil Fathi Safwat, andDirector-General of Al Owais Cultural Foundation, Khalid Al Budoor, inaddition to the media representatives.

Announcing the details, Marwan bin Beyat said: "Based on last year'ssuccess, the DTCM is once again organising this exhibition. Last year,the event attracted overwhelming interest by a large number of intellectualsand the general public who were interested in this art." Arabic calligraphyis one of the most respected art forms and the exhibition provides aperfect platform for learning about the entire spectrum of Arabic calligraphy.

The department has organised a host of activities including a specialexhibition for talented UAE national calligraphers as part of the department'sendeavour to motivate and encourage them.

There is also a section selling calligraphy works and workshops wherelessons will be given to visitors on the art of calligraphy.

In addition, there will be lecture and display sessions with prominentexperts and calligraphers during the exhibition besides a display ofmaterials used in calligraphy like special paper, reed and brush pensand inkpots.

Mohammed Hasan said: "The department has also organised a special majlisfor calligraphers in which they will meet students and others interestedin knowing more about this art. They will provide you the highlightsof the exhibition, and everything you want to know about the Arabic calligraphy."
