AMMAN -- The University of Jordan (UJ) on Saturday officially launched its E-Learning portal, which allows students to interact with their teachers online.
The E-Learning platform provides "quality education" that is accessible to students anywhere and anytime, according to a UJ statement sent to The Jordan Times.
Through this platform, UJ instructors can upload the required curricula for a certain course to make it accessible for their students at anytime.
UJ President Ekhleif Tarawneh told The Jordan Times that chat rooms will be also available to allow students to communicate with each other and their professors online.
The portal, which can be accessed via UJ's website www.ju.edu.jo, seeks to "promote and support the effective use of technology in the curricula through improvements in existing programmes and the creation of new technology opportunities for students and faculty", the statement said.
Tarawneh noted that launching this portal is part of UJ's plan to prepare for integrating online education that allows students to join the university's faculties via the web.
Currently, he explained online education is not accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and once it is approved "we will be ready for it".
Meanwhile, Mohammad Qatawneh, dean of the King Abdullah II School for Information Technology at UJ, noted that developing this e-learning platform will help improve the university's QS ranking on the international level.
UJ ranked among the top 700 higher education institutions in the 2012 QS World University Ranking.
The university's goal is to become among the top 500 universities next year, and among the top 300 within five years.
