SHARJAH, 27th August, 2014 (WAM) -- A medical team at the University Hospital Sharjah has successfully performed a complicated prostatectomy on a patient in his sixties suffering from cardiomyopathy. The team was able to prevent the acute bleeding normally associated with such conditions, resulting from the blood viscosity reducing drugs that are used by cardiomyopathy patients to avoid heart attacks. The patient was discharged on the postoperative day, following a 24-hour medical observation period.
A multi-disciplinary team of doctors and support staff carried out the procedure. The team was composed of specialists from the UHS? Cardiology, Anaesthesiology, Urology, and Intensive Care Departments. The patient?s critical condition in combination with his medical history meant that the majority of hospitals would have show reluctance to admit him due to the lack of modern technologies in their facilities needed to mitigate the risks associated with such procedures, including acute bleeding during and after the operation. The decision to perform the surgery was taken at the UHS. Prof Dr. Mohammed Rajae, Urology Consultant at the University Hospital Sharjah and head of Medical Team, said, "An elderly U.A.E. national patient was admitted to the hospital suffering from acute haematuria caused by repeated urinary retention. The patient has a medical history of open-heart surgery that involved heart valve replacement and a coronary artery bypass. This heart surgery must be followed by blood viscosity medicines, which caused acute bleeding. The patient was admitted for hospitalisation." The patient?s family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the entire team for their role in relieving the chronic pain of their father and in understanding the psychological, physical, health aspects, and age of the patient. They also expressed their appreciation for UHS? assistance with his speedy recovery and discharge, which helped reduce costs considerably. The University Hospital Sharjah?s Urology Department had earlier performed a rare laser prostatectomy on a 95-year-old prostate patient who was discharged on the postoperative day, in what was considered as a milestone in the history of prostate surgery for the U.A.E. and the GCC region.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2014.
