Reem Developers, for its Najmat Abu Dhabi (NAD) project on Reem Island, yesterday announced awarding an AED201 million contract to a globally renowned Asian construction major to develop three marinas and a grand canal after diligent scrutiny of 10 pre-qualified competitive bids from local and international companies. The contract also forms a significant component of the overall project infrastructure-development outlay.

Unveiling details of the contract, senior officials of Reem Developers, the fully owned subsidiary of Reem Investments, said the contract for the development of the three marinas including reclamation and canal works has been given to China Harbour Engineering Company CHEC), a group which has a proven track record in developing harbours and marinas in Hong Kong, China, the United Arab Emirates and other parts of Asia and Africa. Abdulhamid Saeed, Reem Investments managing director, said: "The tender for the development of the three marinas evoked a huge response from global firms which is a significant reflection of the interest generated by the project as well as the enthusiasm to participate in the dynamic real-estate developments of Abu Dhabi, quickly becoming one of the leading destinations for real-estate investment, and NAD which is one of the salient projects leading this interest."

Manish Joshi, Reem Developers general manager, said: "Our selection of China Harbour Engineering Co follows a strict and assiduous round of scrutiny of the bids against global benchmarks. We were convinced that CHEC, with its global and regional expertise, is the ideal partner to develop the three marinas and a grand canal which are integral to the Najmat Abu Dhabi development."

Spread across 16 million square feet, NAD, the star of Abu Dhabi, is an iconic project located on Reem Island which is 300 metres off the northeastern coast of the federal capital. It has been designed to offer best-of-breed facilities in waterfront and island living.

The three marinas - Bay Centre Marina with a 250-metre diameter, Residential Marina consisting of a 200-metre diameter and Resort Marina boasting180 metres in diameter - are strategic to the aesthetic layout of the project.
