Queues at ATM machines around Dubai could soon be a thing of the past if the latest initiative from Standard Chartered proves successful.

The bank has introduced a mobile ATM that is doing the rounds of Al Quoz in an attempt to cope with the high demand for cash from expatriate workers living in the industrial area.

The mobile vans are accom panied by security officials. One of the officials on duty this week said the demand on ATMs at this time of the year was heavy because of Eid Al Adha and celebrations for the New Year.

"The salaries this time around have been released early because of Eid and the New Year. There is a major rush to withdraw money. But it has always been peaceful. Occasionally, some guys wait for a long time only to realise they have no balance. Queues are always maintained and we are always present to help them," said the official, adding that most people were withdrawing between Dh800 and Dh2,500.

"The mobile ATM van makes its rounds during the weekends. Most men are at their worksites from morning until late night. They hardly have any time to visit a bank or an ATM. But during weekends, they gather at the mobile ATM machines," said Karim M, a storekeeper in Al Quoz.
