DUBAI: A former UAE minister and two colleagues have been jailed for two years after being found guilty of fraud. Ex-minister of state Khalifa Mohammad Al-Felasi, American Saleem Helmi, and Indian Bilal Raman were charged by Dubai Public Prosecution with deceiving a 36-year-old Lebanese woman. The victim claimed she was swindled out of millions of dirhams in properties and shares following the death of her businessman brother in 2005.
He left companies and businesses in Dubai and the sister claimed that Al-Felasi asked for half his assets, claiming to be her brother's partner. But he had only been paid to be her brother's sponsor and was not entitled to the property and shares. Al-Felasi's lawyers said their client will appeal against the verdict. An official statement from Dubai Courts yesterday named all the defendants.
