ABU DHABI - A Technip-Cosmoplast joint venture that was signed last year, fructified with the inauguration at the industrial suburb of Mussafah yesterday of a factory for the production of Coflexlite, that is credited as the first its kind in the entire world, wholly dedicated to the production of Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe (RTP).

The facility commissioned at a cost of $100 million and eyes the regional market and beyond for a sales turnover in excess of $10 million over the next five years, is credited as a revolutionary pipeline technology, tailored to provide cost-effective maintenance and trouble free operations, for use in onshore applications. The factory was declared open in the presence of executives from the oil and gas industry and other key operations personnel, by Mohammed Ali bin Zayed, Deputy Governor of the UAE Central Bank.

Technip ranks among the largest engineering service and contracting groups in the field of offshore and onshore hydrocarbon production and petrochemical industries. Cosmoplast is a fully owned subsidiary of Interplast, and a primary member of the multinational Harwal Group of Companies with manufacturing operations spread over the Middle East, Europe and North America.

The Coflexlite plant that is spread over a sprawling 13,000 square metre area utilises a wholly non-metallic construction that renders it resistant to virtually all corrosive agents typically found in an oil and gas production environment. Its range of products is specifically intended for end-users conscious of reducing pipeline life-cycle costs with adherence to environmentally sound operations.

The products are particularly well suited for oil and gas production flow lines, fire water systems and the lines of water and gas injection, effluent water, re-usable and gas transmission, said Jim Dymock, General Manager of Cosmoplast Industrial Company.

"The initial annual production at the factory will be 250km of RTP and 5.5 metric tonnes of high density polyethylene, the capacity slated to rise with the passage of time as things improve," Mr Dymock said.
