Abu Dhabi: Two new public parks will soon be developed in the capital’s Al Samha suburb, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has announced.
The parks will add more than 16,000 square metres of recreational facilities in Al Samha’s eastern area. They will be constructed by the Emirates Aluminium Company (Emal) following a cooperation agreement signed with the municipality. The agreement was finalised during the municipality’s 34th Plantation Week celebrations, which aim to promote environmental awareness among residents, especially children.
The capital currently has 48 parks and 36 playgrounds. In addition to the Al Samha parks, six others spanning about 17 hectares in total will be constructed this year, municipality officials said at the launch of Plantation Week activities last Monday.
Mohammad Al Amiri, director of parks and recreation facilities at the municipality, said the focus is on providing parks in Abu Dhabi suburbs, which are still underserved.
He explained that a 2013 study by the Abu Dhabi Urban planning Council had estimated that 130 more parks need to be constructed by 2018 to serve residents’ needs.
“Our focus is now on the mainland, including suburbs like Baniyas and Shamkha. These areas have limited facilities and residents would benefit greatly from access to more green areas,” Al Amiri said.
