RIYADH - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that it has required Toyota and its local agent to install the brake override system on all Toyota cars in the Kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The system prevents sudden acceleration by reducing an engine's power when the brake pedal and gas pedal are depressed at the same time and comes pre-installed on all cars sold in the US market.
The ministry said all car manufacturers will be required to make certain safety features standard equipment in all cars sold in the Kingdom and promised to take the necessary measures to ensure the rights of the Saudi consumers, similar to those offered to international consumers.
"The mandatory installation of the Brake Override System is a precautionary measure for the safety of car drivers. Currently, drivers do not need to do anything until the manufacturer and its local dealer announces a campaign," the ministry said in a statement. Toyota and its local dealer are also required to launch a campaign to show the proper way to use the system. The ministry stressed that the requirement was made after it had exhausted all voluntary requirements that it had suggested to the company and its local dealer.
