Damascus Countryside - Minister of Transport Yarub Badr Sunday said that three dry ports in the industrial cities of Sheikh Najar in Aleppo, Hesia in Homs and Adra in Damascus Countryside will be established, increasing the number of dry ports to five. He pointed out that al-Sbena dry port in Damascus Countryside, which belongs to General Organization of Railways, has the capacity of 90,000 TEU containers and al-Mislmyeh port in Aleppo could hold 60,000 TEU containers.
He added that works of improving the capacity of the ports are taking place in order to hold 300,000 TEU containers a year. Badr referred that the cost of transportation by train is much less than trucks, as a train could carry 50 containers at once while the same amount requires about 40 to 50 trucks to be carried from a sea port to a dry port, adding that this step would help decrease traffic jam.
