DAMMAM - The Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) is seeking to save 10 to 15 percent power in the next five years with the use of advanced devices that detect malfunctions faster, and by installing thermal insulation in buildings which would become mandatory for house owners by 2012.

The use of the devices would reduce power disruptions, said Engineer Abdulhameed Al-Naeem, head of the company's Eastern Sector, during the Asharqiya Chamber's monthly meeting here, Tuesday.
"Yes the power in my house was disrupted this year just like other subscribers," he said.

"The company's officials deal with the same electricity and meters," the official said.

The company, he said, is holding negotiations with the Ministry of Water and Electricity and the Electricity and Co-Generation Regulatory Authority (ECRA) on the mechanism to implement mandatory thermal insulation in buildings. The decision on insulation was issued in last Ramadan, for implementation to start in 2012.

The company is also approaching the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs to instruct engineering firms to include thermal insulation in all their house designs, he said, adding that the electricity company will not provide power to houses that are not equipped with insulation.

"Thermal insulation saves about 40 percent of power consumed by air-conditioners. Air-conditioning constitutes 70 percent of power consumption.
