DAMASCUS - Export plays an important role as a basic component of Syria's economy with 40 percent of working power employment, and about 30 percent of Syria's gross domestic product.

Syria's Export Promotion and Development Agency (EPDA) has prepared a five-year promotion export strategy for the period 2010-2015, declared Engineers Houssam Al-Youssef, EPDA General Director.

The strategy aims to reduce products high cost, considering Syria's trade and export growth and increase, expected to reach 2,393 billion SYP - 1 SYP= 45 USD, by the year 2015, added Al-Youssef. EPDA strategy aims to promote different commodities and products, including alimentary industries, textile industry, canned food, lowering power costs, yarn and spinning costs.

Meanwhile, Ahnaf Al-Saraj, member of Syrian Exporters Association, declared that the first batch of Syria's organic-cotton-manufactured clothes are to be exported to 18 countries worldwide, mostly in Europe, as well as to China and Mexico.

Al-Saraj said that Bawdiqji Company from Aleppo, and Hama's Cotton Spinning Company and Manaa' Brothers Company have been recently classified worldwide as organic-cotton- related products producers.

Organic cotton free from chemical fertilizers and insecticides, producers are limited in numbers worldwide. Syria came second last year in Asia as far as organic cotton production, preceded only by Turkey and China.
