DAMASCUS - Deputy Information Minister Taleb Qadi Amin on Monday said that the Syrian government is cooperating with the European-Syrian Business Center to establish a center for developing the Syrian media, financed by the Spanish government.

"In light of the new media plans, Syrian Arab News Agency SANA will be shifted  into a TV media agency and the General Board of TV and Radio will be changed to an economic institution in addition to the launch of a new TV satellite channel," Mr. Amin added during a workshop held by Dar al-Baath on the situation of media, in the presence of Information Minister Mohsen Bilal.

He underlined that the government gave licenses to the private sector to issue nearly 100 different media prints, 13 FM Radio stations all over Syrian cities, noting that there is a big number of web sites which are working without licenses and the new media law will organize their work.

For his part, Chairman of the Journalists' Union Elias Murad stressed the importance of supporting and encouraging the "initiative", adding "the Syrian media doesn't suffer form a freedom problem due to the presence of big and vast areas of freedom which the journalists didn't invest in a suitable way."
