MUSCAT -- The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University organised a workshop on veterinary technology programme under the auspices of Her Highness Dr Sayyida Dr Muna bint Fahd al Said, Assistant to SQU Vice Chancellor for External Affairs. Dr S A Prathapar, Dean, College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, who delivered the welcome speech, underscored the need for closer ties and more educational and research collaborations between the human and veterinary medicine professions as a number of zoonotic pathogens that infect and kill people, emerge and re-emerge globally, and acquire characteristics like drug resistance.

Dr Yaseen Ahmed al Mulla, Assistant Dean for Extension, spoke about the Veterinary Technology programme. During the programme, students will be given intensive training in clinical medicine, assisting in surgical procedures, clinical pathology, animal breeding and management. Dr Osman M Gaffar, Head of the Department of Veterinary Sciences, gave a presentation on 'the animal production sector in Oman'.

Prof Eugene H Johnson spoke about the importance of Veterinary Technology programme to Oman. He said that the expertise of the graduates would help in the efforts of the government in combating livestock diseases that inflict serious economic losses to the agricultural industry.
