MUSCAT -- The first major shipment of steel structures and panels for the pipe complex of Gulf International Pipe Industry LLC (GIPI) in Sohar arrived recently at the Port of Sohar from South Korea. Building foundation works for the pipe mill is in its final stages and steel structure erection is expected to start during September. GIPI expects the pipe mill building to be completed by the end of this year, while the machine installation is expected to start in January 2009.

Major civil construction works are being carried out by JK Engineering & Construction Co Ltd (JK Eng), a reputable engineering and construction company, and a structural steel supplier from South Korea. JK Eng is fully committed to the timely delivery of the plant building and its associated works as a fully integrated package.

GIPI will be the first high pressure steel pipe and casing mill of 24-inches to be operated in the GCC region. This mill will further enhance the Sultanate's aspiration to reduce dependency on import of finished products needed to service its strategic oil and gas sectors. Developing this downstream venture in the Sultanate will complement similar efforts by the government towards promotion of local industries. The shareholders of GIPI are Oman Investment Corporation (OIC), Golden Dunes Investments (GDI), Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC), POSCO Steel Services and Sales Company and Arkan Group LLC.
