MUSCAT -- Two Yemeni companies, Manhl al Yemen and Ardhl Ganatem Trading, are showcasing a wide range of spices and herbal products at the country's biggest consumer exhibition, ATF, currently under way at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, Seeb till December 19. "Food enthusiasts, chefs and home makers, suppliers and distributors should check out a wide variety of spices during the 10-day show," says Hassan Mohamed, Senior Manager -- Festivals, OITE, the organisers of the show.

Besides making food taste great, research shows spices can promote health and well-being including anti-ageing and inhibiting of degenerative diseases, according to OITE. A report by the Journal of Medicine and Food reveals that herbs and spices have the power to inhibit tissue damage and inflammation brought on by high-sugar levels in the body. They inhibit the glycation process which has been linked to inflammation and tissue damage in diabetics. Spices have more antioxidant power that help prevent cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and pre-mature ageing.

The spices with the greatest effects were cloves, cinnamon, allspice, apple pie spice, and pumpkin pie spice; top herbs included marjoram, sage and thyme. Study also revealed that cumin and fresh ginger make the most significant contribution to antioxidant capacity.
