Al Isra Wal Miraj, the ascension of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), was celebrated with religious fervour across the nation on Tuesday night.

Special gatherings were held at mosques in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates to mark the event.

Scores of Muslims offered special prayers while lectures highlighting the significance of the day were arranged at key places.

Lajnathula Irfanith Thauheed, a religious group, organised a special gathering on Tuesday night at Awniya Majlis in Dubai, where its president Mohammed Iqbal addressed the gathering. His talk focussed on the life of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and the significance of Miraj.

Special prayers were also offered on the occasion for the prosperity of the UAE and the long life of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Their Highnesses the Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, and for world peace.

Residents in Abu Dhabi marked the occasion with special prayers at mosques. The main prayers were held at Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque in downtown Abu Dhabi where hundreds of residents gathered to hear the Imam deliver a lecture on the life of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

Most stayed back after Isha'a prayers to listen to the Imams reciting verses from the Holy Quran. Community centres also held similar special prayers to mark the holy day.
