Abu Dhabi, August 9, 2007 (WAM): Municipal Affairs Departmentof the Abu Dhabi Municipality is supervising the finishing touchesbeing given to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the ten largestmosques in the world. Director of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque ProjectKhoulah Al Sulaimani said that the main prayer hall of the mosqueis expected to be opened during the final days of the month ofRamadan.
The carpet to be spread in the prayer hall arrived yesterdayfrom Iran and preparations are going on for fixing it. The 5000sq-metrecarpet is the largest of its kind in the world and is hand-madewith 35 tons of wool and cotton. More than 200 workers spenttwelve months weaving the spectacular piece of art in 28 differentcolours derived from a host of herbs. Meanwhile, the 30-million dirham chandeliers have alsoarrived from Germany and the preparations continue for fixingthem at different parts of the mosque. The chandeliers platedin copper and gold are considered world's largest.Public Relations Director at the Municipal Affairs DepartmentMubarak Saif Al Mazroui said that the Sheikh Zayed Mosque isa magnificent addition to the Islamic architectural splendor,and will become a landmark in UAE and the region as a whole.
The main prayer hall under three large domes can accommodateover forty thousand worshippers.
