MUSCAT -- The Omani-based Special Technical Services organised a seminar on "the latest developments in polyolefin piping for oil and gas industry" in co-operation with Borouge, provider of plastics solutions.

The seminar aimed at investigating a 360° perspective on polyolefin applications which are being increasingly used in oil and gas industries.

The seminar started with a keynote address by the PDO followed by a presentation conducted by Borouge about its latest Polyolefin piping materials developments. Implementation issues were discussed in details by teams from STS, United Pipeline System (a subsidiary of the US based Insituform) and Gulf Plastic Pipe Academy (GPPA). Active participation from major oil & gas operators, leading engineering consultants and plastic pipe manufactures in Oman, facilitated an informative session.

Borouge highlighted the importance of its operations carried out at its petrochemical production plant in Ruwais, about 250 km west of Abu Dhabi City in the UAE. Borouge invested $1.2 billion to build the first petrochemical facility in the Middle East there, equipped with the proprietary Borstar technology from Borealis.

In 2010, under the project name of Borouge 2, Borouge tripled the polyolefins manufacturing capacity of the plant. The approximately $ 5 billion investment enables Borouge to produce a two million tonnes of Borstar polyolefins per year. Borouge is expanding its petrochemical plant at Ruwais by 2.5 million (t/y) to a total annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes by mid-2014 to make the world's largest integrated polyolefins plant to produce innovative plastics solutions for infrastructure and oil and gas applications
Basil Macki, Managing Director, STS, announced the formation of a new Joint Venture with (UPS) by the name of United Special Technical Services LLC (USTS).
