A select band of schools here have introduced a five minute visual recap at the end of the lessons, in the belief that students learn better when all their senses are engaged in unison.

A software called Eduplus was launched yesterday at the Central School, Dubai.

The school is part of the New India Model Group of schools. It plans to install the multisensory impact software in all its schools in the UAE.

Sanjeev Padman, Regional Manager of Merchant e' Technology Mission said: "Eduplus is a powerful teaching and learning aid, developed exclusively for schools which follow the CBSE syllabus."

He said that not a word more or not a word less, but what is exactly in the text books is presented in a manner that is easily understood.

The company is based in India and has a presence at the Dubai Media City.

"Schools need not change their current curriculum to accommodate Eduplus. It can be merged into the curriculum being followed in any school. The results of using Eduplus can be seen instantly.

"For example if you show a child a TV commercial over and over again and ask him something of the commercial later, he will be able to clearly remember what he saw.

He will give you each and every aspect of the TV commercial. What we are doing here is taking the math and science syllabus chapter by chapter.

The teacher will continue to teach the lessons in the normal manner as he or she does daily. For example, if a particular class is set for 45 minutes. The theory lessons will be only for 40 minutes. The last five minutes will be shown on the screen. It will be a synopsis of all that was taught in that 40 minutes.

He said this is called multisensory impact. He explained that in a chemistry class for example, the teacher is focusing on chemical bonding. Once the lesson is over, the same topic will be shown on the screen through this software.

"A beautiful array of atoms will be on the screen. The student sees how chemical bonding takes place," said Padman.

He said the software is of 35 Gigabytes. "Each installation takes six to seven hours. Update of the syllabi is a continuous process both at the government levels and at the Eduplus too," he noted.

He said when a change is indicated, the software will create that particular subject and chapter, and will immediately update on all installations.

He said if a teacher or educationist of any insitituion gives a suggestion to create a more effective presentation of certain lessons, then it could be modified to the needs of that school.

"The Eduplus database is totally created inhouse. It contains thousands of animation and videos that cover the syllabi exhaustively.

"It does not contain any sort of clippings or videos from a library or any TV channel, unlike other software available in the market," said Padman.

Eduplus, he said, is not sold to any institution, instead it is leased out on yearly basis so that the institution continues to get updates and latest additions on a regular basis as and when it is happening or when there is a specific requirement.

He said this ensures that Eduplus remains equipped with the latest material.

He noted that in India over 147 schools such as the Kendriya Vidyalaya, the School of Excellence, the Khalsa Group of Schools, Sree Narayana Mission, DAVP and a number of other schools are satisfied users of the Eduplus.

Eduplus, he said, is totally committed to providing quality in education at all levels.

Available are Eduplus for CBSE, Matriculation and for State Boards in India.

It can be deployed for syllabi in Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. The software will soon be introduced for IGCSC syllabi and in Arabic.
