JEDDAH - The Mayor's Office in Jeddah has announced new rules governing the size and location of both public and private swimming pools.

According to Aabed Al-Jidaani, the head of Construction Licenses and Regulations at the mayoralty, private swimming polls must be no less than 25 square meters in size and located on the ground floor or roof of a building.

"Pools open to the public must be at least 80 square meters in size," Al-Jidaani said.

Safety requirements include handrails on pool steps and non-slip diving boards. Diving boards at 2.5m deep pools should be no higher than one meter above water level.

Al-Jidaani revealed no requirements from the authorities as regards the shape of the regions swimming pools, but did note that the mayoralty preferred rectangular.
