JEDDAH, 6 October 2007 -- Khalaf Aljoudi set up his website for blood donors four years ago after he saw a patient with a rare blood type suffering as he could not find donors for an urgent transfusion.
The young Saudi says he aims to create a worldwide database of blood donors complete with their blood groups and mobile numbers, according to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper yesterday.
"This database will be available for those who are badly in need of blood as well as for local and international blood banks," Aljoudi said on his website.
"Donors should not expect to be materially compensated for their donations," he said and urged all interested people to register their names at the website.
More than 10,000 people have so far registered their names. The site (www.freeblood.com) was launched in 2003.
Aljoudi said he was receiving several calls daily seeking blood from people in different areas of the Kingdom.
