Dubai: Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a Dh1 billion road network plan for Meydan, a huge development project with the biggest racecourse in the world.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has endorsed a contract for constructing roads and bridges leading to the Meydan project in the area of Nad Al Sheba in Dubai.
The project spans Muscat Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Ras Al Khor Road and an extension of Al Manama Road, according to an RTA press release.
Mattar Al Tayer, Executive Director of the RTA, said the Meydan road network project includes a suggested canal passing across the Muscat, Dubai-Al Ain, Ras Al Khor and Al Manama roads.
"Therefore roads, crossings and elevated interchanges have to be constructed to allow for smooth traffic flow in the area; which will witness huge property and investment development in the future," he added.
Several phases
The project, which has been awarded to Avecon Company, comprises of several phases.
"The project of roads leading to Meydan is one of the key projects to be undertaken by the RTA," said Al Tayer. "Its importance stems from the iconic Meydan project, which includes the biggest racecourse in the world. The project spans an area of 76 million square feet and includes a hotel, golf courses, shopping and entertainment centres, modern stables, Godolphin racing gallery, waterways, parking for approximately 10,000 cars, and a four-kilometre canal running from Dubai Creek to the racecourse."
The Meydan is scheduled to open in 2010 to host the Dubai World Cup. The project will be a landmark tourist destination attracting visitors from all over the world.
