The renovated Muscat Duty Free (MDF) at Muscat International Airport (MIA) is all set to throw open its doors post the holy month of Ramadan. A soft launch of the renovated MDF which is spread over 1,600sqm was held recently.

The project to renovate MDF began last year. The new-look MDF is expected to be a visual treat for travellers passing through MIA.

Tom Byrne, general manager, MDF, said, "The MDF will sport a fresh new look - from the ceiling to the flooring, we have changed the colour and texture. We have also completed the renovation of the food and confectionery section and the final look will be displayed after Ramadan."

He added that since most of the invited dignitaries are travelling, it was decided that the new look will be unveiled after Ramadan. Byrne said that MDF went ahead with the soft launch to cater to the huge travel rush which is generally witnessed during summers.

"The response that we have been getting from passengers is very good," he said. The soft launch also saw unveiling of summer promotional campaign at MDF which will give shoppers a chance to win US$25,000."

Byrne added that the decor of the 1,600sqm area will have a look of both contemporary and Arabic architecture. "Once a tourist or any traveller arrives at the airport, the very look of MDF will give him a feel of the culture and tradition of the host country," he said.

The renovated area will also now have eight cash counters instead of the current five. The renovation of MDF was carried out in association with Oman Air and Aer Rianta International, an Irish airport, duty free and retail holding company based in Dublin.
