RANGE Resources is confident that Puntland President Mohamud Muse Hirsi has the backing of Somalia Transitional Federal Government President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, who it claims signed off on the company's original contract of work deal and the subsequent production sharing agreement.

Range director Peter Landau said that even Transitional Federal Government Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein Adde had acknowledged the deal and that a tripartite meeting was publicly filmed. "The prime minister said he wanted dialogue with a view to reaching consensus on revenue sharing and collaborating on exploration and production throughout Somalia," he said.

Landau is keen to see the Transitional Federal Government put its cards on the table soon to assuage fears in the markets, claiming that while the Range and Africa Oil deal does not depend on a new Puntland law, it would not look good if the Transitional Federal Government tried to override its legitimacy by purporting to pass a new Somalia-wide law.
