MUSCAT -- The Radisson SAS Hotel, Muscat will participate in Earth Hour 2009 by turning off non essential lights and equipments, minimising the lights in the public areas and switching off the signboard. Earth Hour 2009, an environmental initiative supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is shaping up as one of the greatest voluntary actions the world has ever seen. More than 681 cities in 76 countries already signed up to turn their lights out on March 28 at 20:30 local time.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. This action is for every individual, every business, and every community. Participation of the Earth Hour is part of the Responsible Business Programme which was introduced by the Rezidor hotel Group in 2001.
This year the Radisson SAS Hotel's responsible business team have planned a handful of activities. All staff are undergoing "living responsible business" training were staff are trained to take ownership towards the environment, a non smoking day on the15th of every month has been initiated by the team to encourage staff to quite smoking. The hotel will also be participating in the local charity events, like the blood donation, cloth collection and the annual Terry Fox Run, among other environmental, human rights, health and safety, business ethics and community outreach activities, to raise awareness as well as funds for charity.
