Qatargas And Shell Send First Train 7 LNG Cargo To India

Qatargas and Royal Dutch Shell announced on 20 February the dispatch of the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Train 7 of the Qatargas 4 LNG plant to India. Train 7, located in Ras Laffan industrial city, was the last of four 7.8mn tons/year capacity ‘mega-trains’ built by Qatargas, and was brought into production in the second week of February, taking the company’s overall production capacity up to 42mn t/y (MEES, 14 February). “The cargo is en route to the Hazira receiving terminal in India,” Qatargas said on its website. Qatargas is jointly owned by state firm Qatar Petroleum, which holds a 70% stake, and Shell with 30%.

Shell’s Executive Vice-President Andy Brown said in the statement: “Qatargas 4 opened up new markets for Qatari LNG in China and Dubai in 2008, and continues to look for further opportunities. It is therefore fitting that its first cargo should go to India, a market with significant potential for LNG.” Gujarat, where the Hazira receiving terminal is located, is currently one of the country’s most significant industrial hubs and fastest-growing states, leading the way in Indian gas-fired power generation.
