DOHA - The two-day workshop on "Molecular Monitoring of Food Quality" got off at Qatar University (QU) here yesterday.
The event is being hosted by the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences of the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) to mark its 2nd annual Environmental Biotechnology Workshop.
The opening day of the workshop covered the technological developments of environmental biotechnology re-invigorated by advances in emerging genomics, proteomics and developments on how bio-tech and engineering techniques are applied to detect food quality. Dr Siham Al Qaradawi, CAS Dean and Dr Hamda Al Naemi, Head Biological & Environmental Sciences Department addressed the opening session.
CAS faculty and students, members of staff of QU's Environmental Science Center (ESC), and representatives of the national food laboratories and Ministry of Agriculture were among others who attended. Dr Desouky Abd-El-Haleem, coordinator of the workshop said: "Although the food industries have made significant progress in detecting and removing harmful products from the market, more effective and expeditious methods and instrumentation are still being developed". Dr M Asfer of the Central Food Lab presented his paper on "Environment as a Source of Microbial Contamination of Food".
