Doha - The Qatar Foundation has selected the US firm, Ellerbe Becket(EB), to serve as the Executive Architect of a premier academic medical centre to be built in Doha.
Provisionally known as the Specialty Teaching Hospital (STH), the centre will be part of a new medical zone on the Education City campus. STH will be a state-of-the-art, all-digital medical centre offering specialty care for women and children, as well as general medical services for male and female patients of all ages. It is scheduled to open in late-2010.
Ellerbe Becket (EB) is an award-winning architectural firm and has done extensive work in the healthcare arena, including multiple buildings for the Mayo Clinic and the new sports medicine hospital in Doha's Khalifa Sports City. Cesar Pelli will serve as the signature architect and will be responsible for the physical design of the STH building, said a release yesterday.
STH will encompass three essential missions -- world-class clinical care, medical education and biomedical research. Part of a collaborative effort entitled "one programme in multiple institutions," STH will work closely with Weill-Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to promote excellence in all, said the release.
As the Executive Architect, EB will lead the team of architects, designers, engineers and other professionals in the detailed design of the STH and the medical zone.
Saad Al Muhannadi, the Qatar Foundation's vice-president for capital projects is directing the construction of the STH. "The expertise of Ellerbe Becket and the creativity of Cesar Pelli will allow us to build a facility that is both unique and beautiful, and that fulfills the vision of H H Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned to establish a premier medical and research center in Qatar," he said.
The Qatar Foundation medical zone will include the medical center, residential accommodation for nurses and medical residents, a car park, and a pedestrian walkway to Weill-Cornell Medical College.
